What is Safety Net Express?

Safety Net Express are one day community resource clinics that provide single adults, the elderly, and struggling families in Lake County with quick access to community programs that can provide basic needs support such as rent/mortgage and/or utility assistance.  This collaborative partnership between Lake Area United Way and Catholic Charities of Northwest Indiana eliminates common barriers that make it difficult for individuals and families in need to access assistance programs.

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM A TRADITIONAL AGENCY PROGRAM?

Safety Net Express addresses the two most critical barriers that prevent working households from accessing community resources - child care and operating hours of local agencies.  Often times, many households miss the opportunity to receive help because they cannot visit a community agency during traditional weekday business hours.  Most agencies lack the staff resources to provide assistance in the evenings and on weekends to help reach working families.  With Safety Net Express, families can quickly connect to assistance programs during weekday evenings and on the weekends.  Lake Area United Way mobilizes local community volunteers to aid families and individuals with enrollment.

Safety Net Express also provides assistance in a family friendly, caring environment.  It is our belief that all individuals and families deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.  Our support is a hand up not a hand out.
